When news analyst and special assignment reporter Paul Mallory finally gets offered an overseas gig he actually wants, he's suspicious...but not suspicious enough to turn it down. Not when the job involves going to Riga, Latvia to cover the greatest chess tournament of all time, and certainly not when the leading player is 18-year-old phenom Anna Berzina, whose photo shoots in Sports Illustrated and Maxim reveal her to be far more than just another beautiful mind. If only that was all there was to it. But Latvia's on the brink of civil war, pending the outcome of a January referendum that may see them reunited with a revivified Soviet Union; and when Paul gets caught up in some activity far from the 64 squares of the chessboard, he once again must choose between following orders and following his instincts...

Third Time Lucky a Paul Mallory thriller Stephen C Spencer 9781478235873 Books

Steven Spencer shows himself to be a master at building suspense in this thrilling story that reminds me of the James Bond epics of the 1960's. Paul Mallory is no 007, but a reporter covering a Chess match. The author uses great skill in moving this somewhat (at first) dull character to the point where he becomes a super-hero capable of astonishing feats of international bravado. Brilliantly crafted, and with a pace that quickens with each page, THIRD TIME LUCKY is a rare & phenomenal novel waiting to be discovered. I gave this work 4 stars only because I haven't read S. Spencer's other novels and don't want to pick my favorite too soon. If you haven't read any of this author's work I suggest you do so.

Third Time Lucky a Paul Mallory thriller Stephen C Spencer 9781478235873 Books Reviews

Strongly international in style with a variety of characters typically from the Eastern bloc, Spencer weaves action with strong research to deliver an adrenaline fuelled adventure featuring an international chess tournament and the ever present journalist Mr Paul Mallory.

This is the 3rd adventure in the Mallory series - I suggest starting with book 1, 'It's Always Darkest' and then book 'The Devil You Say' before moving on to this title. The series deals with Mr Paul Mallory in his work as a journalist for the elusive Cramer, but this isn't any old newspaper. It's a newspaper which counts among its distribution a handful of the mega rich. They pay top dollar to have the news before it happens, and Mallory is the dogsbody who has to research it.

With a civil war backdrop that speaks to the cultural tensions of the past Soviet dominance the author captures the tension of the Cold War and bottles it to give a leviathan that gives a broody and oppressive atmosphere in which the apparent suicide takes place.

Riga in Latvia is given flavour through evocative description with scores of pretty women, and a body that falls from the sky near an abandoned building. Undercover agents, damsels in distress and a little too much inside knowledge land Mallory quickly in hot water.

In the latest instalment Mallory reveals a darker, more ruthless nature that gives him a depth not found in the 'paragon/ avatar' style of Fleming but still captures the essence of the Hero verus the World paradigm using wit and intellect, rather than pure brawn, to overcome the challenges he too frequently finds himself in.
I was introduced to Third Time Lucky by a friend who raved about the book and so with high expectations I eagerly downloaded it to my kindle. I hadn't read the previous two books in this series It's Always Darkest and The Devil You Say and yet this book was a complete story within itself. The novel was so engaging I literally could not put it down, every snatched moment I had was spent reading about the hero of the tale Paul Mallory and exploits in a politically volatile Latvia. The author, in my opinion, is a master storyteller and the reason I say this is that the subject matter, in this case the reporting of a chess tournament, is something I have never encountered and yet Stephen C Spencer describes the events in such a way that I found myself totally and utterly immersed in the match and it's outcome. The main character Paul Mallory is such a likeable hero, self-depreciating, witty, heroic and ultimately the type of guy you would like watching your back. The supporting characters are a diverse mix, Paul's boss, the mysterious and Winston Churchill like Mr Cramer, is someone I would definitely like read more about and Paul's love interest Julie, is a strong, sparkling character. The dynamic between her and Paul is captivating and I'm sure there are more stories to come with their relationship developing. I shall definitely be downloading Steven C Spencer's other books and would highly recommend this compelling read. There surely is a film to come out of this novel.
Witty dialog, but too preoccupied with sex. The characters are one-dimensional and lack depth. The game of chess is not really key to the story -- it could just as well have been checkers or badminton.
Third Time Lucky is a first rate thriller/mystery. The plot is full with intrigue, and the action is non-stop. Paul, the protagonist, and his boss Crammer are a bit, but just a little, reminiscent of Rex Stout's Archie and Nero Wolfe. The characters are well drawn, and the writing is crisp. All in all, this is an auspicious start of a promising series.
I'm one that has a soft spot for chess and I liked the way he worked it into the story. The characters were interesting, the plot gripping, and the location intriguing.

I don't remember how I found this book. It might have been a tweet or a post on G+, but like so many that are recommended to me, I went in with low expectations. It didn't take long before I knew this was going to be a good read and I wasn't disappointed.
I love any story that takes place in Riga. The author does a great job of describing the scenes and depicting the emotions of the characters. It was a little unbelievable that Julie would fall so easily for Paul, but with a fiction novel, anything can happen. Stephen Spencer does a good job weaving the various storylines together.

When I read fiction, I usually read a chapter per day before I go to bed. This book kept me wondering throughout the next day what would happen next and I looked forward to the adventure of each new chapter.
